Pinball FX wins when you want a commercially licensed table, current storefront support, and presentation designed as one product. Steam lists the base game as free and sells table packs and individual DLC.

Cabinet builders need to check the exact PC storefront and current cabinet-mode documentation. Zen’s older FAQ says cabinet support existed in the Epic version, while its March 2026 platform update emphasizes the continued importance of the Steam version of Pinball FX3—renamed Pinball FX Classic—to cabinet users. Do not assume every Zen title, platform, or DLC purchase transfers automatically.

Visual Pinball: our freedom pick

Visual Pinball is the clear winner for builders who want an open-source editor, configurable camera views, cabinet displays, specialized controllers, plugins, and cross-platform development.

One important correction: the old article called Visual Pinball X “Windows only.” The project’s official repository now lists Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/tvOS, and Android support, with capabilities differing by build and platform.

The software being open source does not make every downloadable table, ROM, image, sound, or trademark free to redistribute. Get the simulator from its official repository and use content you are legally authorized to use.

Zaccaria Pinball: our vintage-catalog pick

Zaccaria Pinball is the clean choice if the historic Italian catalog is the attraction. Its official Steam page says the free base offers trial play and more than 175 tables, including more than 40 officially licensed Zaccaria recreations.

The Steam page also shows a large DLC catalog and in-game purchases. Prices and bundles shown during a sale are snapshots, not permanent cost facts. Compare the tables you actually want, not the size of a discount badge.

What happened to “The Pinball Arcade catalog”?

The old article treated “legacy licensed catalogs” as one current fourth platform without identifying the product, storefront, availability, or licences. That is too vague for a 2026 buying guide.

A specific historic table may exist on an older or delisted product, but availability should be verified table by table and platform by platform.

The buying decision

Choose Pinball FX if you value licensed polish more than control. Choose Visual Pinball if the cabinet and software stack are part of the hobby. Choose Zaccaria if that manufacturer’s history is the point.
